Cerro Mallo Trek

The track leading to Cerro Mallo starts near Nonthue educational campsite, to which you get along route No 48 towards the Chilean border in Hua Hum. (1hour drive)

It is a steadily steep walk upwards, typical of our Andes range. It is about four hours long, and you will walk through a beech forest and thick colihue cane undergrowth.

After this physically demanding trek, the forest ends and the panorama opens up, so we can see a wide rocky range that looks like an amphitheatre. We still have to cross a small thaw river and an area of stunted lenga trees before we get to the ridge and start to walk up along rocky land towards the summit.

The view at the summit is amazing: Choshuenco, Lanín and Villarrica volcanoes and their huge valleys in different directions can be seen.
