traful
The Traful is a big fish river set in one of the most dramatic valleys in all of Patagonia.
Amazing spires stand sentinel over the Traful while weather shaped limestone sculptures engage the imagination. The river itself seems to be liquid crystal and only at about a depth of five feet does the water pick up a tint of glacier blue. Record fish are an 18 lb. salmon, a 16 lb., brown, and a 23 lb. rainbow! Fewer fish are brought to the net compared to other rivers but those that are can be enormous. In the '98-'99 season client Ed Cutter landed a 24 1/2 inch rainbow and the year before the biggest fish was a 28 inch brown. This is the only river I would discourage beginners from visiting although one client landed a 25 inch brown on her third day fishing ever. The Traful is really a river to be enjoyed by more experienced anglers hunting for a fish of a lifetime. It is best to fish this river for two or three days with the idea that you are hunting for one or two monster trout. This is not a hatch matching river but one where spot fishing and casting large attractors in the turbulent runs is most effective. Occasionally batches of lake fish (both trout and salmon) move through and the fishing can be spectacular and easy. It is a gem of a river, unparalleled in beauty.
